Anglian Water Basildon WWT – Wastewater storage tank

Project: Anglian Water – Wastewater storage tank

Location: Basildon WWT

Scope: Temporary solution for 400,000 litre Wastewater tank

We were contacted by Anglian Water and M Group to assist in providing a temporary solution for additional wastewater storage at the WWT in Basildon, Essex. One of their existing tanks was out of commission, and they needed additional storage adjacent to the existing tank so they could plan a solution to replace the permanent tank.

At Butek Tanks a specialist division of Butyl Products Ltd., we are able to provide temporary and permanent solutions for both the dirty and clean water (DWI approved) sectors: Stormwater Tanks, Drinking Water tanks (DWI reg 31), Wastewater Treatment Systems (MWS), Wastewater tanks, DWI Rental tanks, 10-year warranty

Challenges:

•Since the new tank needed to be positioned close to the existing one, the only viable location was on the access road. After consulting with the AW site manager and the M Group team, we agreed to place the tank in this area.

•Additional structural inspections revealed a 185 mm level variance, so we produced drawings for a levelling concrete base designed to meet the tank’s stress calculations and ensure proper installation.

•To achieve the required capacity within the available space, we selected a 30/8 tank (9.14 m diameter × 6.07 m height), providing approximately 390 m³, including a 0.15 m freeboard.

•The AW technical team reviewed and approved the drawings, conducting independent tests on the road surface to confirm structural suitability. Once approved, we coordinated with our civils support team to install the concrete base in preparation for the new tank.

•Because the tank would contain wastewater, sewage, or sludge, we recommended our impermeable Landflex ES lining solution, suitable for a wide range of liquids, including hydrocarbons.

Challenges:

•Our tanks are approved under the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) 305/2011/EU and CE‑marked in accordance with EN 1090: Steel and Aluminium Structures – Design, Manufacture, and Supply of Water Tanks, Silos, and Storage Systems.

•We manufacture the tanks using Magnelis ZM310 coated galvanised steel panels, which provide up to four times greater corrosion resistance than standard galvanised steel. Panel thickness varies according to independent stress calculations for each project.

•For installation, our Butek Tank team employs a revolutionary jacking system that allows tanks to be assembled at ground level, significantly reducing or eliminating the need for work at height, improving both safety and efficiency.

•The supplied tank was fitted with six 8″ outlets and PN16 gate valves, mounted using Midfix support brackets. A 900 mm manway was installed to allow safe access for inspection and cleaning, along with a reinforcing ring to strengthen the open‑top design.

•Additionally, we provided level‑measuring equipment to meet the client’s specific operational requirements during installation.
