Isle of Mull – Aquaculture Tanks

Summary

Project: 5no. Tanks 8.0mØ x 2.0m high supply and install

Location: Isle of Mull, Scotland

Customers Name:  Scottish Sea Farms

Scottish Sea Farms required additional capacity pre-smolt tanks for growing Salmon in freshwater.  They selected our tanks with the knowledge that they had previously used our tanks which had been supplied and installed over 20 years ago.

Challenges

Time: Scottish Sea Farms wished to have the tanks installed prior to the autumn and winter months, we therefore had a relatively small window to have all the materials manufactured (corrugated steel and fusion welded lining panels), delivered to site, and installed by our installation team.

Linings: The client required a lining material which could be regularly scrubbed and disinfected to prevent disease from occurring in the fish stocks.  A regular flexible and prefabricated lining material wasn’t suitable to meet the long-term expectations of the client, so we specified our high-quality semi-rigid Landflex FT4 material.

Location: Isle of Mull, Scotland, whilst being a beautiful Scottish Isle, is often faced with inclement weather – high winds and heavy rainfall.

Results

We completed 2no. pre-start site surveys to ensure that the client was suitably advised with regards to the preparation of the tank bases and to then inspect the completed tank bases prior to attendance by our site team.  This prevented any hidden delays and conflict from additional costs being incurred.

Each tank was lined with a 4.0mm Landflex® FT4, which has superior abrasion, UV and weather resistance compared to other lining materials, making it the ideal impermeable lining solution for this particular fish-farming project.  All extrusion welded seams were spark-tested to ensure that the tanks were fully water-tight.

Our installation team worked long days whilst the weather was good and also worked through the weekend to have the project completed within the required timeframe.  The client was entirely satisfied with the quality of the installation and the safe working good practice which was demonstrated by our experienced installers.  Upon completion of each tank, we conducted a full water test and final sign-off before handing the tanks over to our client.
